Howlite is a borate mineral first discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada. South Africa is one of several countries where quality howlite is found, alongside the United States and Mexico. The stone is prized for its porous, veined appearance that resembles white marble or ivory. The distinctive grey or black veins run naturally through the white stone, making each piece unique.
Natural howlite is white to light grey with dark grey or black veining. The veins form in irregular, spiderweb-like patterns across the surface. No two howlite stones look exactly the same — some have bold, thick veins, while others have fine, delicate lines. South African howlite is known for its consistent quality and attractive veining patterns.
Howlite is relatively soft (3–3.5 on the Mohs scale) and porous, which means it can be easily dyed to resemble other gemstones. You will often see "Blue Howlite" on the market — this is natural white howlite that has been permanently dyed to look like turquoise.
