This is Libyan Desert Glass — a rare and powerful tektite formed approximately 28.5 million years ago when a meteorite struck the Great Sand Sea near the Egyptian-Libyan border. The intense heat of impact — over 1,600°C — melted the desert sand, creating this luminous golden-yellow natural glass.
Libyan Desert Glass is composed of 98% pure silica (lechatelierite, a natural quartz glass). Its signature golden colour and translucent quality have made it a treasure for millennia — prized by pharaohs, worn as jewellery, and discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
The origin of Libyan Desert Glass was a mystery for over 50 years. While scientists now agree it was created by a meteorite impact, the impact site itself has never been found.
