Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral that forms when oxygenated and carbonated water reacts with copper-bearing rock. It is often found alongside azurite (its blue counterpart), goethite, and calcite. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, Mexico, Namibia, Australia, and the Southwestern United States.
Unlike uniform stones like Amethyst or Rose Quartz, Malachite's bands are unique to each piece. The stone is formed in concentric layers — like the rings of a tree — creating patterns that are completely individual. No two pieces of Malachite look the same.
In the Middle Ages, Malachite was believed to protect against the "Evil Eye". These "eye stones" were used to ward off negative happenings and enhance visionary powers. The ancient Egyptians used it for amulets and tomb paintings. Russian royalty carved it into magnificent vases and tabletops.
